PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION

DOUGLAS CROWNED IRISH SENIOR CUP CHAMPIONS

Munster champions Douglas captured their thirteenth Irish Senior Cup following a 3½-1½ win over Connacht Champions Claremorris in this afternoon’s final at Malone Golf Club today.
Douglas drew on all of the experience of Eavan Higgins and Kate MacCann to see the Leesiders home. Once again this afternoon they captured their points, preserving their 100% record, against Kung Fanning and Kate Gallagher.
In the top match, Sarah Helly rounded off a great tournament with three wins from three after defeating Karen O’Neill on 17 to reduce the deficit to one match.
Focus then swung to the fourth match where Julie Coyne led by two holes standing on the 16th tee. The Youghal youngster defied her years and held her nerve with solid iron play to end Sarah Gallagher’s challenge and closed out the match at the next green.
Celebrations of the highest order then ensued as Douglas claimed their 13th Irish Senior Cup crown and first championship since 1990.
Earlier in the day, Helly was formidable in her 13th green victory over current International Charlene Reid at the top of the order. Her performance sparked her team-mates into action and Emily McHugh followed suit, dispatching Sonja Verschuur by the same margin.
In the second match, Naoimh Quigg was unlucky to find an unplayable lie on seventeen allowing Kung Fanning to secure a 2 and 1 win and a place in the final for Claremorris.
In the second semi-final, seasoned campaigners Eavan Higgins and Kate MacCann made light work of their morning rounds winning on fifteen and fourteen respectively for Douglas.
Aisling O’Leary replied for Enniscorthy with a 4 and 2 victory over Karen O’Neill but an unlikely comeback was not on Julie Coyne's agenda as she closed out her tie with a regulation par on the fifteenth.
