CHARLOTTE THOMPSON WINS LIPHOOK SCRATCH CUP BY SEVEN
Charlotte Thompson,19, from Channels Golf Club, Essex, won the 20th Liphook Ladies’ Scratch Cup with rounds of 73 and 71 for a total of 144 yesterday.
She won by seven shots from Georgie Mundy (151) from Dunwood Manor, Hampshire.
Charlotte, playing off 1, is a member of the Essex County first team. This was her third outing at Liphook. The event is played over a slightly longer, measured course as used in English Girls’ Championship – set at 5950 yards, 424 yards longer than the ladies yardage, with very challenging carries off the tees.
Evidently Charlotte had no trouble with this! A field of 48 took to the course on a sunny day punctuated by two heavy downpours and the threat of thunder and lightning as darkness began to fall with players still out on the course. Once again this year half the field were under 18 years of age! The golf course was in immaculate condition which brought praise from all the players who came from all over the country to sample Liphook.
Tara Watters, from Muswell Hill, Middlesex, was third on 151 and Hampshire’s Kerry Smith from Waterlooville - the former England international player back to golf after a two-year break, finished fourth on 154.
Defending champion Rachel Goodall from Heswall, Cheshire came fifth with a score of 155.
Next year the event will be held on Saturday, September 15.
Editor: Sorry we cannot give you the individual totals other than those of the winner. We hope to have a full list of the scores on Monday.
