DEFENDING CHAMPION HELEN JONES LEADS BY FOUR

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Ireland’s Helen Jones (Strabane) looks all set to successfully defend her Irish Senior Women’s Open Strokeplay title as she leads the field by four shots going into tomorrow’s final round at Greenore.
As the winds abated for the first time all week, Jones raced away from the chasing pack with a birdie on the fifth to turn one over par. A steady run of pars through the back nine saw her birdie the last and sign for a four over par 78. Scotland’s Alison Bartlett leap frogged the field with a best-of-the-day 77 and is joined by Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna), Catherine Reilly (The Heath) and overnight leader Minna Kaarnalahti from Finland all on 161.
Sheena McElroy (Grange) lies one shot further back while debutante Carol Wickham (Laytown and Bettystown) lies menacingly in joint eight place. Wales' Jean O'Connor is another shot back while 2006 and 2008 Champion Vicky Thomas (WAL) improved her standing with a solid 80 to lie joint tenth.
A final 18 holes strokeplay tomorrow, Friday, will see the Champion crowned around 4pm.

Ireland A won the Nations Cup from Ireland B with Wales and Canada following closely behind.
