GRAEME ROBERTSON WINS EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES TITLE

GRAEME ROBERTSON ... European title to cap a great season

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Graeme Robertson, 23-year-old sports studies student at Stirling University and a Glenbervie Golf Club member, capped a terrific breakthrough season by winning the European universities' men's golf championship over four rounds in Slovenia today.
Robertson had rounds of 68, 68, 68 and 70 for a splendid 14-under-par total of 274 to head a field of 58 players. This season Robertson has gained a first cap for Scotland in the home internationals, won an SGU Order of Merit event - the South-east District Championship and finished runner-up in the Tennant Cup and Sutherland Chalice as well as finishing third in the East of Scotland Open and the Cameron Corbett Vase. Robertson might well have won the Scottish amateur championship but for coming up against champion-to-be David Law in the fifth round at Western Gailes.
His consistency saw him finished second to James White in the SGU Order of Merit table. He has one more year's studies ahead of him at Stirling.
Stirling team-mates David Booth, Jack McDonald and Alexander Culverwell completed a 1-2-T3 finish in Slovenia in what was only the second staging of the European universities golf tournament.
Booth, who hails from Rotherham and won the Scottish youths' open championship in 2008, finished runner-up, five shots behind Robertson.
Booth was the first-round leader with a seven-under-par 65 but couldn't break 70 with his three subsequent rounds of 71, 72 and 71 for nine-under 279.
Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie), the 2009 Scottish boys' open stroke-play champion, and Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar), winner of the Battle Trophy SGU Order of Merit event at Crail this season, tied for third place with Ireland's Kevin Stack on one-over 289.
McDonald had scores of 76, 73, 68 and 72, Culverwell 73, 76, 65 and 75.
Stirling students also dominated the European universities women's championship by finishing first, second and fifth.
The title was won by Harriet Beasley, a member of Woburn Golf Club, Buckinghamshire. She had rounds of 80, 77, 80 and 78 for a total of 315. She finished one shot ahead of team-mate Hannah McCook, the Scotland girl cap and Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club member.
Hannah, who had only just enrolled at Stirling, had rounds of 79, 86, 79 and 72.
A third Stirling student, Jordana Graham, a member of Southerness GC, finished fifth on 326 with scores of 79, 82, 85 and 80.
Ashley Smith, a student at St Andrews University, finished sixth on 330 with roundes of 81, 84, 80 and 88.
