NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Ardee Golf Club

Finalists Determined for Junior, Intermediate and Minor Cup

Day two of the ILGU Inter-Club Championships at Ardee Golf Club saw the semi finals of the Junior, Intermediate and Minor Cup take place, while quarter finals in the Challenge Cup and Junior Foursomes were contested.
Matches got underway with the semis of the Junior Cup where East Leinster champions, Newlands, emerged as winners versus Kilkenny and East Cork defeated Athenry.
At the top of the order, the young and talented Rebecca O’Regan set Newlands on their way to tomorrow’s final with an impressive 4 and 3 victory over Bridie McGarry who was inspirational for Kilkenny yesterday during their quarter final defeat of Shandon Park.
A win by the same margin followed for Newlands’ Danielle Colgan in the last match before Margaret Cuddihy struck back for Kilkenny by holding her nerve to secure a win on the home green against Orla Heffernan in the second game.
However, Claire Keegan playing the penultimate match put Newlands through to the final, thanks to a 2 and 1 win against Phyl Doyle.
East Cork, who lost out at this stage last year, will be Newlands’ opponents in the final following a well fought victory over Connacht champions Athenry in the other semi final. Martha Maher was the first player to win a point with an impressive 6 and 5 victory before Sarah O’Brien delivered a 3 and 1 win.
With the second match tied and Josephine Noone looking likely to secure a point in the final match for Athenry, Deirdre O’Mahony, playing in the first match, stepped forward to put the tie beyond doubt with a 1up win against Ann Marie Mulry.
Mullingar and Loughrea will do battle in tomorrow’s intermediate cup final after victories today against Shannon and Rockmount respectively. Mullingar had a nail-biting win against Shannon with the tie not being decided until the final hole of the final match.
Miriam MacManus was the hero for the Mid-Leinster champions as she secured a win on the 18th to add to earlier emphatic wins for Mullingar by Breda Conlon and Jeanette McDonnell.
Loughrea also had a narrow win against their semi final opponents Rockmount, who took made a bright start with an early 6 and 5 win by Jan Lindsay. Cherry O’Connor levelled the tie for Loughrea with a 2 and 1 win in the second game before Rose Mannion won by 3 and 2 meaning Mary Verdon’s 2-hole victory in game three was enough to take the Connacht champions through to the national final.
In the Minor Cup semi finals Munster champions Roscrea comfortably defeated a much fancied Portumna team. Patricia Rowland lead Roscrea with a 3 and 2 win in the top match, while Ann Parlon followed with in the fourth match winning by a margin of 5 and 4 before Eleanor Ryan Carroll booked Roscrea’s place in the final thansk to a 4 and 2 victory in the second game. Roscrea will face neighbours Templemore in tomorrow’s final as the Tipperary side snatched a win at the first extra play-off hole in the final and deciding match against a gallant Dun Laoghaire team.
Templemore’s Michelle Lawlor got the Munster champions off to a flying start in the semi final with a 6 and 5 win but Brenda Sullivan and Jacinta McGinley recorded wins for Dun Laoghaire to put the Dublin team ahead before Kathleen Collier levelled the tie for Templemore. In the final match, Mary Hayes’ solid two putt at the 19th was enough to defeat Angela O’Sullivan and progress Templemore to the final.
The quarter final of the Challenge Cup was the tightest contested affair of the day with Beaverstown and Woodenbridge needing extra holes in two matches to decide the tie. Woodenbridge’s Ann Murphy was in sparkling form during her 8 and 7 win, as was Maura Collins of Beaverstown who also recorded a big win by a margin of 7 and 6. Christine Galbraith nudged Woodenbridge ahead with a 3 and 2 victory but Beaverstown again levelled the tie through Cecily O’Donovan win on the 19th.
All attention turned to the top match where Rose O’Connor and Clare Murray continued to battle. Murray eventually emerged victorious at the 21st hole to win the tie for Woodenbridge and give them a place in the semi final versus Northern champions Spa.
The Junior Foursomes quarter final playoff saw Craddockstown defeat Clandeboye as Audrey Quinn & Joan Fitzgerald paired up for a 3 and 2 win while Eileen Jones & Marie Flynn won by 5 and 4 to give the East Leinster champions a place in the semi final versus Tralee. The other junior foursomes semi final will be contested by Curra West and Castlecomer.
Friday also sees the quarter finals of the Senior Foursomes take place as Munster champions Douglas face Roscommon in what is sure to be a thrilling contest.
