LINCOLNSHIRE KEEP IT UP WITH 9-0 WIN OVER NORTHAMPTONSHIRE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Lincolnshire carried their sparkling form into the second day of the English Counties’ Championship at Thorndon Park, Essex, with a 9-0 whitewash over Northamptonshire.
In the day’s other matches Lancashire halved with defending champions, Hertfordshire, while Gloucestershire beat Sussex 5-4 in a cliffhanger of a match.
Lincolnshire and Gloucestershire both have two points from the two matches played so far while Lancashire have 1½, Hertfordshire ½, and Sussex and Northamptonshire have yet to win. Today (Wednesday), Hertfordshire play Gloucestershire,
Sussex play Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire play Lancashire.
Lincolnshire, who have won 17 points out of a possible 18 over the first two days, are making their third consecutive appearance at County Finals. According to county captain Julia Sales they’ve grown into the occasion: “The first time we came we didn’t know what to expect but the girls enjoyed it so much they really wanted to come back.
“The younger ones have improved by being here over the last couple of years and the older ones are great role models. They are a great bunch of girls and their team spirit is terrific.”
The team set up their success in the foursomes and quickly sealed the point with big-margin singles wins from Emilee Taylor and Holly Clyburn in the singles. But three players had to stage comebacks to secure the clean sheet.
Jess Wilcox and then Sophie Bearsdall turned their fortunes around, leaving Helen McDougall with the challenge of making it 9-0. A superb three-wood to within 6ft of the pin on the 16th helped her to go one up and she held her nerve over the remaining two holes.
Hertfordshire, who were heavily beaten on the opening day, made a fine start to their next match against Lancashire. They captured all three foursomes and English champion Lucy Williams added their fourth point with her singles win.
But then the Lancashire fightback began as they staged an excellent singles performance and came within a whisker of a remarkable win. However, Hertfordshire’s 13-year-old county champion Ella Ofstedahl denied them with a birdie on the last to win the hole and give her team a vital half point.
The Hertfordshire team includes four new, young players and captain Julie Nedza said: “We were hopeful at lunchtime and so the result is tinged with disappointment, but it’s still a great achievement. The girls have all battled and they are enjoying playing good golf.”
Lancashire captain Joy Bury remarked: “We were very disappointed with the foursomes, which are usually one of our strengths, but thrilled overall. It’s been a great day and a great atmosphere.”
Gloucestershire and Sussex were engaged in a mighty battle and the outcome – in Gloucestershire’s favour – was decided only after the last pair had reached the last green. Bethan Popel snatched the winning point for her team by getting the better of Paula Carver after both players were bunkered in front of the green for two.
Sussex had been the leaders at lunch, with two points from the singles. But Gloucestershire rapidly overtook them in the singles, thanks to big wins from internationals Charlotte Ellis and Hannah Barwood. Then, the nailbiting began: Jo Hodge and Jemima Gregson both managed to win the last hole to halve their games, leaving Bethan to make certain of a hard-fought win.
Gloucestershire captain Karen Rix commented: “It was an extremely close match and went right to the last hole. We didn’t really fire in the foursomes, but Sussex played good golf. In the afternoon our girls played some super golf, steady and solid, and just didn’t make any mistakes.”
