PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION

ILGU INTER-CLUB FINALS
Ardee Golf Club

NATIONAL TITLES FOR MALAHIDE, CURRA WEST, LOUGHREA, TEMPLEMORE AND WOODENBRIDGE

The final day of play at the 2011 ILGU Interclub Championships in Ardee saw Malahide, Curra West, Loughrea, Templemore and Woodenbridge claim national titles.
Following disruptions to Friday’s play, due to heavy rain showers, the final of the Intermediate and Minor Cup, in addition to the semi finals of the Senior Foursomes, had to be suspended due to darkness. Play recommenced on Saturday at 08:20 with the semi-finals of the Senior Foursomes. Enniscorthy held a slender advantage against City of Derry overnight and continued their progress to record a 3-0 win.
The second semi final between Roscommon and Malahide was a much closer affair. With the second match ending in favour of Roscommon and Malahide taking the last match it was up to the Malahide pairing of Alison Taylor and Olive Shannon at the top of the order to send their side through to the final thanks to a fine victory at the third extra playoff hole.
Malahide maintained their momentum in the final, this time claiming victory on the home green in the final match. Alison Taylor and Olive Shannon were again in fine form recording a 4 and 3 win in the first match to level the tie following an earlier win for Enniscorthy’s Jennifer King and Connie Doyle in the second game.
There was never much separating the final pairings with Enniscorthy moving to a one-hole lead after 13 holes but finding themselves one down after 15, only to level the tie on 16. Regulation pars for both sides at the 17th saw the teams all square playing the final hole.
Malahide’s well-struck tee shot found the heart of the green at the par 3 18th, while Enniscorthy came up short of the green and failed to get up and down, leaving their 8ft downhill putt agonisingly short. Lily Owens then stepped forward to convert from 5ft and lift the trophy for the Dublin side.
There was little distance overnight between the Loughrea and Mullingar teams who contested the Intermediate Cup final. Brenda Conlon had secured the first point for Mullingar before Breda Lawless, who won four holes in a row around the turn, went on to secure a significant one-hole victory in the top match before failing light suspended play. Mary Verdon started Saturday morning dormie one up against her Mullingar opponent and duly delivered a two-hole win to put Loughrea ahead.
Mullingar leveled the tie through Miriam MacManus who scored a 3 and 2 win in the final game. Rose Mannion and Helen Collier held the title in their hands as they were involved in a battle which saw neither side with more than a one- hole advantage over the closing nine holes.
Loughrea won the 17th to square the match and with the 18th and 19th holes halved, the deadlock was eventually broken at the 20th as Mannion produced a regulation par 5 to take the title for the Connacht champions.
Extra holes were again required in the penultimate match to determine the winners of the Minor Cup. Neighbours Roscrea and Templemore found themselves tied 2-2, following a series of comfortable wins for both sides. Kathleen Collier overturned an overnight deficit of two holes and held her nerve at the first extra play-off hole to claim the trophy for Templemore.
There was a similar story in the Challenge Cup final as East Cork went in search of their second national title when they took on Woodenbridge. Breda McCarthy led the Munster champions with a two-hole win and was closely followed by Regina Browner who won by 4 and 3 in the fourth match.
However, Woodenbridge quickly levelled the tie through wins for Chrisitne Galbraith and Marie Belton by margins of 3 and 1 and 4 and 2 respectively. Ann Murphy appeared to be in control of her match throughout the day against East Cork’s Rosie Becker, having been two up at turn and holding that advantage until the 14th.
Becker managed to level the tie at the 18th and force extra holes but Murphy regained her composure to produce a magnificent drive at the 19th which set her on her way to claiming the title for the Wicklow side.
Curra West emerged as champions in the Junior Foursomes as they defeated Craddockstown in the final. There was little separating the teams at the halfway stage with Curra West one up in the top two matches and one down in the final match.
Martina McDonagh and Ann Fahy paired up to deliver the first point for the Connacht champions with a 3 and 2 win. They were followed by teammates Carmel Cunningham and Mary McDonagh who scored a 3 and 1 win in the second game.
The final match was subsequently called in with Craddockstown one up through 15 holes.
