USC Aiken's Kyle Godsman (from Moray)
Named Men's Golfer of the Week
In his first tournament the new US college golf season, Kyle Godsman finished in a tie for second at the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiated, firing a seven-under-par 209 in three rounds. The sophomore from Moray, Scotland, finished one stroke behind Furman's Matthew Broome and tied with Charleston Southern's David Denlinger at the tournament, which featured 13 Division I teams and two PBC squads. Godsman, shot a 70 in the opening round before going even lower with a four-under 68 in the second. He shot a 71 in the third round. His 68 is one of three fired so far in the PBC this season, tied for the lowest in the league, while his 69.7 stroke average now leads the conference.
At the Editor's request, Kyle's dad Donnie has E-mail in some more details about his son:
Kyle is from Hopeman and is 20 years old. The competititon he was playing in was won last year by Chris Robb from Banchory with the same score as Kyle had this year, so the Americans must be impressed by golfers from the North!!
The competition was the SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, measuring 7,062 yards par 72. They don't seem to play courses under 7,000 yards anymore over there!
The Americans love stats and Kyle is top of the rankings at the moment with his stroke average of 69.7 and he led the comp in birdies with 16.
The team that played also included Mark Dickson from Edinburgh while Neil Beattie from St Andrews is also on the golf squad so a wee Scottish enclave in the Deep South exists.
Regards
Donnie Godsman
