Daniel Young from Perth, a student at Lynn University, Boca Raton in Florida, finished joint third in a field of 90 players at this week's Cougar Invitational men's college tournament over a par-71 course of 6,515yd.
Daniel, pictured right, scored 69, 73 and 71 for a level par total of 213, finishing two shots behind the winner, Craig Gibson (Georgia Southwestern) (68-71-72) and another Georgia Southwestern player, Christopher Hall (74-68-70).
Georgia Southwestern had three players in the top four with J P Griffin (73-74-66) shared third place with Young.
Dubliner Liam Ashby (Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee) finished joint 46th on 225 (76-76-78), the same score as Clark Nelson who tranferred to Clayton State University, Atlanta from Stirling University. Nelson scored 75-72-78.
Two other Clayton State students from Scotland, Chris McManus from Bearsden and Glasgow's Gavin Hay, are also worthy of mention.
Chris started slowly with an 80 but was improving by leaps and bounds - a 76 in the second round and a 73 in the third - by the time the tournament finished. At that rate he might have broken 70 had there been a fourth round!
Gavin Hay, pictured below, had the misfortune to be disqualified at the conclusion of the second round.
He signed for an incorrect scorecard. Which was a great pity because Gavin had a two-over-par 73 in the first round and was allowed to play in the third round for team score purposes and had a par-matching 71. He was, in fact, the lowest scoring member of the Carson-Newman team over the first and third rounds.
Georgia Southwestern (856), not surprisingly with three men in the first four, won the team event but only by five shots from Lynn (861) with Barry (873) third. Carson-Newman (885) tied for seventh place and Clayton State (896) finished joint 11th in a field of 17 teams.

WHITEHEAD, GEDDES TOP 20

FINISH AT GRAND CANYON

Sam Whitehead, pictured below, from Milton Keynes, a sophomore student at Grand Canyon University, finished joint seventh in a huge field of 100 players at the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational 54-hole tournament at The Wigwam Resort, Lichfield Park, Arizona.

Sam, a Woburn member who was the leading qualifier for the match-play stages of this year's English amateur championship, had rounds of 71, 72 and 72 for a one-under-par total of 215 over the par-72, longish course of 7,228yd.
Team-mate Mark Geddes from Cheshire just made the top 20 with rounds of 71, 77 and 71 for 219 and a share of 19th spot.
Winner by three shots by Chico State's Kyle Sousa with scores of 69, 70 and 70 for seven-under-par 209.
Chico State scored a double whammy in also winning the team event by a single shot from Colorado Springs. Grand Canyon finished 17 shots behind the winners in fifth place out of a field of 19 teams.
