EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY LAST IN US CHAMPIONSHIP

Changed days for East Tennessee State University - last of 14 teams in the US Collegiate men's championship which ended at the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside course yesterday.
Rhys Davies and Co seem a distant memory now with the current team members not capable to challenging for team or individual honours.
East Tennessee State has for long recruited most of its roster with players from Great Britain and Ireland. That is still the case but the present crop, even though Rhys Pugh from Pontypridd and a member of the winning GB and I Walker Cup team last month is a freshman, just don't seem to have the same star quality of of their predecessors who included Walker Cup man Welshman Rhys Davies, now on the European Tour, and former Scottish champion Michael Stewart who was a team-mate of Pugh in the Royal Aberdeen match.
Rhys Enoch from Cornwall was ETSU's highest placed player in the US Collegiate Championship. He finished joint 31st on 220 with scores of 71, 74 and 75 for a six-over-par total of 220 over a par-72, 7017yd course.
He finished 10 shots behind the joint winners, Dominic Buzzelli (Auburn) (67-73-70) and Johannes Veerman (Texas A and M) (71-70-69) who finished two clear of the field of 75.
Rhys Pugh finished way down in joint 64th place with scores of 80-75-73 for 228.

Scottish freshman Scott Gibson, pictured right, from Dumfries finished 69th on 231 with scores of 79, 76 and 76. And another freshman at East Tennessee State, Sam Edwards from Bigbury, England, finished 72nd of 75 with scores of 80, 79 and 77 for 236.
UCLA (852) won the team event by three shots from joint runners-up Washington and Auburn. East Tennessee State finished last of 14 on 908.
Clearly East Tennessee State will be having a look at its recruitment policy. Perhaps it is time they relied more on US-grown prospects for its men's golf team roster.
