GIBSON CUP MATCH-PLAY KO'D BY WEATHER IN EDINBURGH

Report from Anne Brownie, Chair of the Gibson Cup Committee

After a golfing season memorable for the number of weather-related cancellations and postponements, the Gibson Cup over Edinburgh Leisure’s Braid Hills Golf Course is yet another to add to the list of competitions dealt a blow by heavy rain.
Today's semi-finals and finals were washed out together with the Consolation Salver competition.
Warm, dry and unusually calm weather for the medal qualifying round on Saturday saw some great scoring in the benign conditions; all four of the foursomes pairs who qualified to try to win the Gibson Cup shot scores better than or equal to the par of 72.
Competitors were looking forward to their Sunday rounds in this late-season event which is sponsored by www.golfing-lady.com . However, overnight rain and mist resulted in the need to delay play before a ball could be struck on Sunday morning - due to the poor visibility.
Initially, the course which had been in excellent condition for Saturday’s play was coping well with the deluge. Unfortunately, as the low cloud persisted and play could not start due to the lack of visibility, the sheer volume of incessant rain took its toll and the greens staff who had worked so hard to present the course in such good order were left with no option but to close it. This was very disappointing for everyone involved.
The intention is to reschedule both the matchplay and consolation stages to a date early next golf season. Confirmation of the date will be emailed to competitors as soon as possible.

Saturday’s Results
The leading net scores featured some regular Gibson Cup competitors, including the defending holders Ruth Brown and Viv Curran of Lothianburn, along with some first time qualifiers. The best score of the day was recorded by Margaret Ritchie and Janet Hardie of Harburn who posted a wonderful 67.5 early on (4.5 under par) with the next best score a super 69.5 from Jacky Burnett and Claire Barnish of Broomieknowe. With all four pairings due to contest the semi-finals in such fine form, some great matches were in prospect - only to be knocked out by the weather.
1. Margaret Ritchie/Janet Hardie (Harburn) 81 (13.5) Net 67.5
2. Jacky Burnett/Claire Barnish (Broomieknowe) 91 (21.5) Net 69.5
3. Vivien Mitchell and Louise Wells (Prestonfield) 92 (21) Net 71
4. Ruth Brown/Viv Curran (Lothianburn) 80 (8) Net 72
The competitors due to play in the second flight matchplay were Fiona Smith and Aileen Kennedy (both Harburn), Sal Shepherd (Craigmillar Park) and Kay Baillie (Musselburgh), Anne Henderson (Aberdeen Ladies) and Gail McKill (Gullane Ladies) and Zandra Mathieson (Broomieknowe) and Sandra Kempston (Craigmillar Park).
One winner of the weather-affected Gibson Cup is the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity for which £227 was raised – thanks to all who contributed.
