LUCAN WIN ALL-IRELAND FOUR-BALL TITLE IN THRILLING FINISH
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Lucan won the Miele All-Ireland Four-ball championship at Kilkenny Golf Club on Sunday when, in a most exciting finish, they beat Faithlegg with a birdie at the fifth extra hole after the sides had tied at 2-2.
Faithlegg’s first pairing, Valerie Power and Vera Harding, closed their match out early with a 4 and 3 victory. Lucan fought back by winning the second and third matches 2 and 1 and 4 and 3 respectfully.
It all came down to a cliff hanger of a fourth match with Celia Hill and Pat Tilson from Faithlegg winning by two holes at the 18th to bring the sides level six holes each.
This forced a play-off which saw the lowest Faithlegg pairing of Valerie Power and Vera Harding teeing off on the first against Sandra Mc Caffrey and Grace Mulhearn from Lucan.
With a large gallery following, the firstm second, third and fourth extra holes were halved. Lucan secured victory at the fifth with a birdie 3 to great scenes of jubilation.

THIRD-PLACE PLAY-OFF
Mannan Castle bottom pairings of Karen Forrester/Rita O’Loughlin and Gill Rouiller/Jo Morris secured third place for Mannan Castle by beating the final Mountbellew pairings by 2 and 1 and 6 and 5 respectively to win by a 2 hole margin overall.
Mountbellew looked favourites by winning the top two matches both by 3 holes but the Mannan Castle came good at the end and clinched third place.
