English girls champion Hayley Davis, pictured, joint leader with one round to go, had to settle for joint second place in The Alamo Invitational women's college tournament at Briggs Ranch golf course, San Antonio in Texas today.
It's the third time freshman Hayley, who was English women's amateur champion in 2010, has been runner-up since she made her debut for Baylor University, Waco in Texas, in September.
Hayley had rounds of 70, 70 and 74 for a two-under-par total of 214 over the par-72 course (6,272yd). In her final round, the Wimborne, Dorset youngster simply could not squeeze a single birdie out of the course. She had 16 pars and two bogeys (at the second and 12th).
Fabiola Arriago (University of Texas-San Antonio), a sophomore from Mexico, was one behind Davis after rounds of 69 and 72 but she was able to pull off a decisive two-shot swing with a final round of 72 for 213 to Hayley's 74 for 214.
Sharing second place with the English girl were the joint 36-hole leader, Monifa Sealy (Central Florida) with rounds of 69, 71 and 74, and Steffi Nelson (Nebraska) with rounds of 72, 73 and 69 (the best last round).
Texas San Antonio were able to score a double whammy by taking the team title as well as the individual hours.
Leading placings in a field of 14 teams were:
866 UTSA, 869 Baylor, 880 Texas A and M.
