News today from the "Letters of Intent" list on the GolfWeek website that one English girl - Charlotte Thomas from Surrey, one English boy - Cameron Shaw from Derbyshire, and one Irish teenager, Keagan Cummings from Dublin, have committed themselves to American universities with effect from August 2012.
Below we highlight the careers so far of the three talented teenagers:
CHARLOTTE THOMAS BOUND FOR WASHINGTON
CHARLOTTE THOMAS. Born in Surrey but based in Singapore, where her father works, for the past five years. This year Charlotte led the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship after 36 holes before finishing fifth at the end of the four rounds at Royal Ashdown Forest GC. That was in August. A month later Charlotte Thomas won for the second time in China. This one was the Annika Sorenstam Invitational at Mission Hills GC, Shenzhen. Charlotte came with a strong late run to win this tournament.
Her previous win in China was a Nick Faldo Series Asian girls' event.
Charlotte has signed up to enrol at the University of Washington, Seattle on the west coast of America next August.
KEAGAN CUMMINGS SIGNS UP FOR THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina men's golf coach Andrew Sapp has announced the signing of Keagan Cummings of Dublin, Ireland. Cummings played golf at the IMG Pendleton School in Bradenton, Florida, and will join the Tar Heel team in the fall of 2012.
"We are thrilled to add Keagan to our Tar Heel golf family," says Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "Being from Ireland but going to school in Florida has given Keagan wonderful golf experiences both at home as well as in the States. He is a very mature young man with a great work ethics and strong desire to succeed. Keagan knows how to win, and he has competed at the highest level in junior golf. He will fit in beautifully with our team and help us reach our goals of winning ACC Championships and competing for NCAA titles."
Cummings, currently ranked 34th in Golfweek's Junior Ranking for the class of 2012, was a member of the 2011 Ireland team at the boys' home internationals. He was also a member of the 2009 Irish Under 16 Team.
In junior competition in 2011, Cummings placed sixth at the St. Augustine Amateur, finished seventh at the AJGA Under Armour Championship, placed ninth at the Irish boys championship, finished 12th at the AJGA Laredo Energy Championship and tied for 16th at British boys championship stroke play before advancing to the third round of the match-play stages.
Cummings won two tournaments in 2010 - the IMG Tour Naples Grande and the Innisbrook Easter Classic. He was the runner-up at the HJGT Spring Championship, finished third at the FCWT Mark Bostick Golf Championship at the University of Florida and placed eighth at the Irish Boys Championships.
"I chose UNC because I believe that with the addition of such an accomplished coach as Coach Sapp, that the program can only go from strength to strength, and with the help of Coach DiBitetto, they will be able to take my game to the next level," said Keagan.
"Carolina is known for very successful athletics as well as a fantastic education, which is why I am very excited to become a Tar Heel and join the UNC family."
The University of North Carolina's main campus is at Chapel Hill
CALIFORNIA HERE I COME FOR CAMERON SHAW
CAMERON Shaw has signed a Letter of Intent to enrol at the University of California-Berkeley next August. A native of Derbyshire, he won the county's Under-18 boys' championship this past summer and broke the amateur course record at Kedleston Park Golf Club in the process.
In his first round of the event, the 17-year-old from Chevin shot an eight-under-par 64 and followed that with a second round score of 75 to take the title on five under.
That left Shaw two shots clear of Mark Porter of Chesterfield (71/70), who won the Under-16 title.
Shaw was also able to make it through pre-qualifying for the Open Championship at Lindrick this season and put in a creditable performance at Broadstone in the Carris Boys Under-18 open amateur stroke-play championship with scores of 72, 74, 72, 73 to finish 11 over par in 36th from a field of 131.
The main UC-Berkeley campus is in the San Francisco Bay area.
Writing on the UC-Berkeley website, the Golden Bears' head golf coach Steve Desimone said:
"Cameron is a real sleeper in the 2012 class," Desimone said. "Not many know about him, but that will change quickly. With his pedigree and working with (coach) Peter Cowen, Cameron will be a tremendous addition. He has all the makings to be a major contributor for years to come."
