CORY WHITSETT STRIKES AGAIN TO WIN PATRIOT INVITATIONAL
FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
Left-hander Cory Whitsett logged a second off-season victory on Friday at the Patriot All-America Invitational.
The Alabama University sophomore student held off team-mate Bobby Wyatt to win at Wigwam Resort’s Gold Course in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
Whitsett also won the Western Refining All-America Classic in a play-off in November. He was one of four Crimson Tide players present at the Patriot, an 84-player event co-hosted by the Folds of Honor Foundation.
Each player in the field represented a fallen service member and carried a special golf bag with that individual’s name emblazoned upon it.
After an opening-round 2-under 69, Whitsett shot the round of the tournament, a seven-under 64, on Day 2. He finished with a 66 for a 14-under 199 total that left him three shots ahead of Wyatt.
Arkansas’ Austin Cook and Duke’s Julian Suri were tied for third at 4-under 209. Joe David of Mississippi and Paul McConnell of Texas-Arlington tied for fifth another shot back
Aberdeen University law student Nick Macandrew, who gained an invitation to this prestigious event by winning the RandA Scholars Tournament at St Andrews earlier in the year, finished T54 with scores of 75, 72 and 78 for 225.
