HEATHER MacRAE SHARING THIRD PLACE IN AZORES LADIES OPEN

Heather MacRae had a mixed bag of three birdies and five bogeys in returning a two-over-par 74 in the first round of the 54-hole Azores Ladies Open at Campo de Golf de Batalha on the Atlantic islands.. The Gleneagles Hotel player from Dunblane is in joint third place, two shots behind the amateur leader, former British women's amateur champion Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale), after birdies at the sixth, long ninth and long 13th but shots dropped at the first, third, 11th, long 12th and short 17th. Carnoustie's Katy McNicoll, the only other Scot in the field for this Ladies European Tour's Access Series tournament, is sharing 15th place on 78 with an even more mixed bag of figures than MacRae had. McNicoll birdied the short third, the eighth and the long 13th but ran up a double bogey 6 at the long fourth and dropped single shots at the second, short seventh, long 10th and 12th before a mediocre finish of bogeys at the 14th, 16th and 17th added up to 40 shots for the inward half.   LEADING FIRST ROUND SCORES Par 72 70 Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) (am). 72 Mariana Macias Capuzzi (Spain).
