Defending boys' champion Max Rottluff from Dusseldorf, winner also of the Golfdatalab Scottish youths title in 2010 by 10 shots and beaten finalist in the British boys' championship at Barassie that same year, has made an excellent start to his defence of the boys' title in the Junior Orange Bowl golf competition at the Bilmore course, Coral Gables in Florida.
Early starter Rottluff, 18, who will enrol at Arizona State University next August, shot a four-under-par 67 over the 6,742yd course with birdies at the long fifth, the seventh, the long 15th, the 16th and the long 18th. His only bogey came at the 17th.
Second place is shared overnight by six players, including boys from Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic.
Nathan Kimsey (Woodhall Spa), the only British or Irish boy in the field of 64 boys from around the world, had a disappointing round of eight-over 79, which included a triple bogey 6 at the short eighth.
First-round leader at the head of a girls' field of 36 players is South Korea's Hyo Joo Kim with a three-under-par 68 over a course of 6,089yd. She did not have her first birdie until the 10th but followed that up with birdies at the short 12th, long 15th and 16th. Like Max in the boys' section, Kim had onlyu one bogey, at the short 14th.
She leads by two shots from Maria Fernandes Torres (Puerto Rico).
France has three girls in the leading eight, including Celine Boutier, beaten finalist in the British girls' open amateur championship at Gullane last August and Perrine Delacour, winner of the British girls' championship at West Lancs Golf Club two years ago.
