MIDLOTHIAN NAME NEW FACES FOR COUNTY FINALS

By MARY RICHARDSON
MIDLOTHIAN CLGA captain
The selection committee are pleased to announce the team for the Scottish County Finals which are being held at Dumfries and County from September 16-18. Midlothian will play Ayrshire on the Friday, Perth and Kinross on the Saturday and Dumfriesshire on the Sunday.
Unfortunately, we are losing three of our team who got us to the finals. Rachael Watton has left for the USA on a four-year golf scholarship, Louise Fraser is heading Down Under for a long planned trip, and Claire Hargan, in her role as SLGA Championship Manager, is responsible for running the finals. However we do have great replacements. Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse), pictured, returns to the team and both Linda Bain (Lochend) and Sal Shepherd (Craigmillar Park) come into the team for the first time.
The full Midlothian team is:

Linda Bain (Lochend)
Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse)
Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw)
Karen Marshall (Baberton)
Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe)
Wendy Nicholson (Broomieknowe)
Sal Shepherd (Craigmillar Park)
Jane Turner (Craigielaw)

Reserve:
Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe)

EDITOR'S NOTE: We would be pleased to publish the Ayrshire, Dumfries-shire and Perth and Kinross teams for the county finals when they have been selected. E-mail the information to Colin@scottishgolfview.com

EUROPEAN GOLF ASSOCIATION REVERSED BIENNIAL DECISION

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
If, like me, you are wondering why Scotland are not defending the European senior women's team championship in Bulgaria this week, Dr Sheila Hartley, CEO of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, has the explanation which, is a very reasonable one, once the facts are explained.

WHY SCOTLAND ARE NOT DEFENDING SENIOR WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP IN
BULGARIA THIS WEEK

By DR SHEILA HARTLEY, CEO, SLGA
In 2009 the European Golf Association conducted a survey of its members into, among other things, the frequency (holding them in alternate years) of the ladies’ and men’s and senior men’s and senior ladies’ team championships. There were 33 responses and the majority were in favour of holding these championships every two years.
The main driver for this was economic. It costs a fortune to host one of these events (the SLGA’s budget for the European girls’ at Murcar was £65,000) and a small fortune to participate (in the region of £10-15k each).
The EGA Championship Committee recommended that a biennial frequency be introduced and this was endorsed by the EGA Executive Committee at its meeting in December 2009 where it was decided that from January 2011 the Men’s and Ladies’ Team Championships would be held biennially in odd years with the seniors in even years.
Following the 2010 Senior Team Championships the team captains, with no authority from their governing bodies, wrote a letter to the EGA petitioning for the Senior Team Championships to be held annually.
I must tell you that Pam Williamson did not sign the letter from the captains of the ladies’ teams.
The letter was discussed at the EGA Championship Committee in October 2010 and referred to the EGA Executive Committee for decision.
At the meeting of the EGA Executive Committee in October 2010 the decision taken in December 2009 was reversed.
The Home Nations, England, Ireland and Scotland (Wales does not participate in senior team championships), discussed the matter and wrote to the EGA requesting that the original decision stand. However the EGA was not for changing its mind again.
Given that the economic circumstances that led to the original decision to hold the Championships biennially still prevail the Home Nations agreed that we will only participate in the Senior Team Championships in alternate years which is why England, Ireland and Scotland are not in Bulgaria or in Portugal where the Senior Men’s Championship is being held.
Hope this clarifies things for you.

Sheila

DANIELLE McVEIGH TURNS PRO, SAYING "TIME IS RIGHT"

DANIELLE McVEIGH in action for Great Britain and Ireland in the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Royal Porthcawl in June. Image by Cal Carson Golf Agency.

EDITOR'S NOTE: It's been such a busy month that we missed the fact that Curtis Cup player Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down) turned professional earlier this month and made her debut in the Ladies Irish Open at Killeen Castle.
Here's what the Irish Ladies Golf Union website had to say about the the decision of the winner of the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship (at Royal Aberdeen) and Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play title to leave the amateur ranks:

FROM THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Irish women's amateur champion Danielle McVeigh announced her decision to turn professional on Monday, August 1, leaving behind her a glittering amateur career in which she rose to prominence by winning, among others, the British Amateur Open Strokeplay in 2009 and the Helen Holm Scottish Open Stroke Play Championship last year.
Danielle commented on her decision saying, “The time is right for me to progress and I have always wanted to turn pro. I am really excited about competing against some of the top golfers in Europe on a regular basis and I look forward to improving my game to the standard where I will play in some of the best tournaments in the world.”
“I have had so much support from everyone in Ireland, especially my club, Royal County Down, the help and support I have received from the staff and members of the club has certainly contributed to my success.”
“I have also had amazing support from the Irish Ladies Golf Union, who have supported me since I joined junior coaching at the age of 14. Their support in sending me to tournaments has allowed me to test my game against the top amateurs in the world.”
Danielle has also credited the support she has received from the Irish Sports Council and Sports Council Northern Ireland (SCNI), saying “The ISC and SCNI have provided great support to me over the last two years; the professional help and advice from the Sports Institutes have really helped me develop my approach to the game, by focusing on nutrition, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning as well as planning my performance.”
“My greatest inspiration has been my father, who passed away last year. He introduced me to the sport he loved when I was about 11. He always encouraged me and I know he would be really delighted that I am turning pro.”
Danielle plans to compete at in a number of events in the LET Access Tour with the hope of playing a full schedule on the LET Tour in 2012 after gaining a player's card at the LET Q School at La Manga.

LONDONER YOUSAF FINISHES SECOND
IN GRAND VIEW'S 1-2-3-4 IN MICHIGAN

Yousaf Khan from London, a student at Grand View University, Des Moines, Iowa finished second as his college golf team dominated their opening event, the Crusader Classic, at The Tradition at Treetops, Gaylord in Michigan.
Yousaf had rounds of 67 and 69 for four-under-par 136, finishing second, a shot behind team-mate Mike Slavin (65-70).
Grand View players filled the first four individual placers with Josh Manske third (72-68 for 140) and Aaron Ahrendson (69-72 for 141) filling third and fourth spots.
Not surprisingly, Grand View (550) won the team title with a bit to spare. Marian University (576) finished second and Madonna Univeersity (591) third in a field of six squads.
