Angel Yin and Briana Mao played to a draw at the Arizona Silver Belle.
The two were named co-medalists after remaining tied at the conclusion of eight play-off holes at Whirlwind Golf Club’s Devil’s Claw course in Chandler, Arizona.
Yin, a seventh-grader from Arcadia, Calif., and Mao, a University of Virginia freshman from Folsom, Calif., ended regulation at 7-under 209. Both players parred the first six play-off holes, birdied the seventh, then parred the eighth. They stopped play at that point because of darkness.
Mao had birdied three of the final four holes during the final round to catch Yin, who led through the first two rounds of the tournament.
“The round today I am really proud of, really, everything came together well,” Mao said. “The playoff holes, however, we kept parring and parring. We were both making great shots. It was a tough play-off.”
Yin, a relative youngster in the field, has experience playing against older players and winning. She won the California Amateur in 2010 as a 12-year-old. “It’s kind of intimidating playing against older girls,” Yin said. “It’s like a whole new level of golf.”
Mariana Sims, a 17-year-old from Austin, Texas, was third at 5-under 211. Gianna Misenhelter was fourth another shot back. Four players tied for fifth at 4-under 212, including Tulsa’s Kristina Merkle.
