LEONA MAGUIRE SECOND, LISA FOURTH IN PORTUGUESE CH/SHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Defending champion Leona Maguire, 17, finished second and twin sister Lisa fourth at the 82nd Portuguese Ladies Amateur at Montado Golf Resort, Setubal, nr Lisbon today.
Chasing overnight leader Roberta Roeller’s eight-stroke advantage, Leona birdied the first, third and seventh to turn two under par and trail Roeller by six strokes.
Further inspirational birdies on 13 and 14, where Leona, pictured left by Cal Carson Golf Agency, bunkered both of her tee shots, went unmatched and after birdieing the 16th and 17th holes, the defending champion from the Slieve Russell club stood just one shot adrift on the 18th tee.
Leona missed the green to the right and Roeller found the front edge. Roeller proceeded to hole from the full length of the green, winning her first title by three strokes after a "gutted" Leona failed to get up and down.
Playing in the group in front, sister Lisa birdied the third to turn one under the card and lead the chasing pack. A birdie on the 16th repaired some of the damage of two bogeys on the back nine, eventually signing for an impressive level par 72 to finish joint fourth.
Ireland’s only other player to make the final day’s play was Gillian O’Leary who birdied the third on her way to an 83.
France’s former British girls champion Perrine Delacour carded a level par 72 to separate the twins in third place while Finland’s Anne Hakula fired a two under par 70 to join Lisa in joint fourth.
