WHITNEY HILLIER WINS WOMEN'S LAKE MACQUARIE BY 7 SHOTS

West Australian Whitney Hillier has confirmed her ongoing return to big time golf with an emphatic victory at the Lake Macquarie Women’s Amateur Championship at the Belmont Golf Club south of Newcastle, Australia this week.
The 21-year-old Hillier, pictured, led by nine strokes from Breanna Elliott going into the final round. Although the runner-up produced the best round of the day (73) it was always a bridge too far in terms of staging a serious challenge to the eventual winner.
Hillier’s final round of 75 in what were good conditions on the final day was still good enough for a seven-shot victory over Yarrawonga’s Elliott with Elliott’s fellow Victorian Tilly Poulson a further four shots back in third position.
A former Australian girls champion, Hillier has bounced back from a career- threatening wrist injury which kept her out of the game for 14 months during 2010 and 2011 but she has this week highlighted just what a talent she is. The Lake Macquarie Men’s Championship begins on January 26th at the Belmont Golf Club.
