SCOTT GIBSON MAKES TOP 20 IN PUERTO RICO CLASSIC
Scott Gibson from Dumfries, a first-year student at East Tennessee State, made the top 20 with a final round of one-under-par 71 for a level par aggregate of 216 in the Puerto Rico Classic men's college tournament at Rio Mar Country Club's River Course, Rio Grande.
Gibson's earlier rounds were 70 and 75. He had four birdies in his final round after starting at the 16th with a bogey.
Gibson, pictured right, finished joint 19th in a field of 75 players, having been joint 25th at the start of play.
Gibson's team-mates did not do half as well - in fact, despite the Scot's effort, East Tennessee State finished last of 15 in the team event.
The highest placed ETS finisher after Gibson was Rhys Enoch, 69th on 237 with scores of 77, 83 and 77.
Rhys Pugh, a Walker Cup her for GB and I at Balgownie last September, certainly would not have made the team with the way he played in this event.
The Welshman shot 81, 79 and 78 for 22-over-par 238 and 70th place.
Tom Heggarty from Cheshire did even worse. He finished 71st with scores of 84, 79 and 76 for 239.
The fifth member of the East Tennessee State squad, Peter Wilson, failed to finish the tournament.
Winner with a 10-under-par total was Justin Thomas (Alabama) (67_71-68).
He finished a shot ahead of Talor Gooch (Oklahoma State) (72-69-66) with James White (Georgia Tech) third on 208 (70-68-72).
