NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IMG
The field for the fifth edition of the HSBC Women’s Champions is confirmed with 63 of the world’s best women golfers ready to do battle at the Tanah Merah Country Club, Singapore, from Thursday to Sunday (February 23-26).
Reigning champion Karrie Webb faces a tough task defending her title against the world’s best with 18 of the world’s top 20 players on the Official Rolex Ranking in the line-up including World No 1 Yani Tseng, World No 2 Suzann Pettersen, World No 3 Na Yeon Choi, World No 4 Cristie Kerr and World No 5 Paula Creamer.
Jiyai Shin and Ai Miyazato, winners of the HSBC Women’s Champions in 2009 and 2010 respectively, arrive in Singapore eager to win back their crown while crowd favourites, Michelle Wie and Natalie Gulbis, will be on a long list of players hoping it is their turn to add this coveted title to their résumés.
The entry list reads like a who’s who of golf with a staggering 49 of the 50 top ranked players on the final LPGA Official Money List of 2012 making the journey to Singapore for the tournament now widely regarded as ‘Asia’s Major.’
The field is packed with the world’s best women golfers with 18 nationalities represented at this year’s tournament, and between them they have won more than 450 international tournaments and 36 Major titles.
Giles Morgan, Group Head of Sponsorship at HSBC said, “We are very much looking forward to seeing this elite field compete for a title that has, so far, only been won by players’ who have held the No.1 ranking. We try to make our tournaments a special experience not only for our customers and spectators, but also for the players.
"I think that the entry list shows that the HSBC Women’s Champions has developed into a tournament that no one wants to miss. The players are the most important part of any tournament and, with this incredible line-up, we really feel we have all the ingredients to have our best ever HSBC Women’s Champions.”
