Our recent report from the Wyndham Spring Invitational men's college tournamenat at TPC Four Seasons, Las Colinas, Texas failed to highlight the fact that a British-born sophomore student, Sam Russell (Southern Nazarene University) from East Sussex finished second to Jared Consoli (Oklahoma Christian).
Sam (pictured) had 10 birdies over the 54 holes and was heading for his first win of the 2011-2012 college golf season when he led by THREE strokes with only five holes to play.
But Russell was caught over the home stretch by Consoli who won by two shots with scores of 68-70-73 for 211 - two shots ahead of Russell who scores 70-70-73 for 213.
Yousaf Khan (Grand View University) from London and Andrew Abercrombie (Southern Nazarene) from Largs, Ayrshire were two other Brits we overlooked. Must have been either early morning or late at night when I was trawling GolfStat for college golf information.
Yousaf finished T34 with scores of 73-77-80 while Andrew, in his final month or two at Southern Nazarene, shot 86-76-80 for 244 and a T64 position.
Our earlier report did highlight the fact that Anglo-Scot Alasdair Dalgleish (Oklahoma Christian) from West Sussex finished T25 on 228 with scors of 74-78-76.
Southern Nazarene (885) tied with Oklahoma City for second place behind team winners Oklahoma Christian (873) in a field of 15 teams.
... AND BRINGING YOU RIGHT UP TODATE
Bringing you bang up todate with Southern Nazarene University's exploits - they provided the individual winner, Swedish student Johan Andersson, and finished third behind those great rivals Oklahoma City and Oklahoma Christian in the UST Mamiya Texas Intercollegiate which finished at Hawks Creek GC, Fort Worth yesterday (Monday).
Andersson returned a pair of 69s for a six-under-par total of 138 over the par-72, 6,847yd course. He won by a single shot from Zach Monson (Texas Wesleyan) (69-70).
Southern Nazarene's Sam Russell is still chasing that first win but his first-round 66 was the lowest score of the 36-hole tournament. His second round was a 77 which put him T12 on 143 in the final standings.
Team-mate Andrew Abercrombie finished T33 on 148 with scores of 76-72 while Alex Irvin from Essex, a junior student at Berry College, Georgia, was T77 on 157 (73-84).
The aforementioned Oklahoma City beat Oklahoma Christian in a play-off for the team title after they both finished on 567 at the head of a field of 16 teams.
Southern Nazarene (571) finished a gallant third.
+If you know of British/Irish students playing on the US college golf circuit and we have not been figuring them in our reports, please feel free to draw our attention to these omissions by E-mailing Colin@scottishgolfview.com
