SAM STRACHAN WINS AT MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA

Sam Strachan from Inverallochy won on the United States college golf circuit this week.
A third-year student at Huntingdon College, Montgomery in Alabama, Sam had rounds of 77 and two-under-par 70 for a total of 147 to head a field of 47 players by one stroke in the Wynlakes Wynter college tournament at Wynlakes Country Club, Montgomery.
Sam, a former pupil of Fraserburgh Academy, is a member of Murcar Links Golf Club and has played for Scotland in the schoolboys international against England.
He was beaten by Chris Robb in a play-off for the 2008 Paul Lawrie Scottish schoolboys championship at Inchmarlo. Last summer Strachan won the Templeton Trophy as the leading individual in the inter-district youths tournament between North-east, North and Angus at Oldmeldrum.

SALLY WATSON MAKES TOP 10 IN CALIFORNIA

Edinburgh-born Sally Watson, a student at Stanford University, California, finished joint eighth in at field of 80 at the Bruin Wave Invitational college tournament at El Cabellero Country Club, Tarzana in California.
Sally had steady rounds of 75, 77 and 76 for a total of 228 over a par-72, 6131yd course.
The Scot, who played in the 2008 and 2010 Curtis Cup matches, finished just behind Tiffany Lua (UCLA) who has been selected to play for the United States in the June Curtis Cup match at Nairn. Tiffany finished joint sixth on 226 with scores of 73, 76 and 77.
Winner by four shots was Christine Wong (San Diego State) with rounds of 68, 73 and 78 for 219.
Stanford (929) finished sixth of 15 in the team event won by Pepperdine (903) from UCLA (905) and Oklahoma State (911).

LIAM JOHNSTON jt 40th IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Liam Johnston (Tennessee-Chattanooga) from Dumfries finished joint 40th in a field of 90 at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto college tournament at Palmetto Golf Club, Aiken in South Carolina.
Liam, pictured right, had rounds of 74, 76 and 73 for a total of 223 over the par-70, 6017yd course.
He finished 15 shots behind the winner Ben Kohles (Virginia) who had scores of 69, 70 and 69 for a total of two-under-par 208.
Tennessee-Chattanooga (877) finished ninth of 18 in the team event won by Clemson (854) ahead of Virginia (855).





ALASDAIR DALGLEISH T25 AT LAS COLINAS, TEXAS

Anglo-Scot Alasdair Dalgleish (Oklahoma Christian) tied for 25th place in a field of 75 at the Wyndham Spring Invitational college tournament at TPC Four Seasons, Las Colinas in Texas.
Alasdair, pictured right, had rounds of 74, 78 and 76 for a total of 228 over a par-70, 6547yd course.
He finished 17 shots behind the winner by two, team-mate Jared Consoli who had rounds of 68, 70 and 73 for a one-over-par total of 211.
Oklahoma Christian (873) won the team title ahead of joint runners-up Oklahoma City and Southern Nazarene (both 885) in a field of 15 squads.

GAVIN HAY JOINT SIXTH IN NORTH CAROLINA

Gavin Hay from Glasgow, a third-year student at Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City in Tennessee, finished joint sixth in a field of 90 at the Richard Rendleman Invitational college tournament at the Country Club of Salisbury, North Carolina.
Gavin, pictured right, had a pair of 71s for a total of 142 over the par-71, 6,665yd course.
He finished two shots behind the winner from Bromley, Adam Hedges (Belmont Abbey) who had rounds of 71 and 68 for 139 and a one-shot win from Scott Lambert (UNC-Pembroke) from Matfen Hall in the North-east of England.

JESSICA MAKES TOP TEN AT LUFKIN, TEXAS

Jessica Schiele from Grimsby, a student at Oklahoma City, finished joint eighth in a field of 60 at the Lady Jack Crown Classic college tournament at Crown Colony Country Club, Lufkin in Texas.
Jessica, pictured left, scored 80, 80 and 81 for a total of 227 in a high-scoring event over a par-72, 6,092yd course.
A Texas wind of over 40mph - that qualifies as a gale! - made it a tough test for all the girls.!
Rachel Hanlon (Western Texas) from St Andrews finished T45 with rounds of 91, 92 and 84 for a total of 267.
Even the winner, Julie Aime (Lamar), did not get close to par with rounds of 78, 74 and 74 for 226.
Oklahoma City (996) finished fourth and Western Texas (1013) sixth of 11 behind the runaway team title winners, Lamar (952).

GRANT FORREST DOWN THE FIELD AT FRESNO

Former Scottish boys champion Grant Forrest from North Berwick, a student at San Diego University, played well below his potential in finishing T47 in a field of 93 at the Fresno St Lexus Classic at Fort Washington Country Club, Fresno in California.
Grant, pictured right by Andy Forman, scored 74, 71 and 80 for a total of 225 over a par-72, 6,729yd coourse.
Winner by four shots was San Diego team-mate Alex Ching with scores of 71, 69 and 69 for a seven-under-par total of 209.
San Diego University had only two players in the top 20 so they finished third on 1096 in the team event won by Oregon State (1089) with Washington State (1093) runners-up. Fifteen teams took part.

GREG RICHARDS FINISHED THIRD IN FLORIDA


One set of tournament results we missed at the end of February was the men's Georgetown Invitational over the Slammer and Squire course at St Augustine, Florida.
Greg Richards from Edinburgh, a senior (fourth year) student at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia, finished joint third on 146 with a pair of 73s.
Greg, pictured right, finished three shots behind the winner, Andy Thorne (Averett) who had rounds of 69 and 74 for a total of 143, one under par for the 6,940yd course (par 72).
There was a field of 57 players.
