STIRLING STUDENTS IMPRESS AT BALMY LOSSIEMOUTH LINKS

By DR ROB McPHERSON
The first day of the Scottish universities championship for the Jack Allan Trophy, at a balmy Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth, saw many of the key contenders shoot scores under or around par.
As always, Stirling University players impressed - David Booth and Darren Timms (both Stirling) both shooting one-under-par 69s on the tight and challenging Moray New.
However, they were joined on that score by Matt Wheeler (St Andrews) and were chased hard by Gordon Munro and Don McAndrew (both Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen) and Kit Holmes (Stirling) all of whom shot 70.
Aberdeen University players Nick McAndrew and Gavin Bissett, Edinburgh players Roddy Forgie and James Hendry, along with Stirling's Angus Carrick, all shot 71 and are still keenly in the hunt.
On Moray Old, in the women's championship, Scottish Under-18 girls champion Eilidh Briggs (Stirling) - going for an unprecendented "Grand Slam" of the four Scottish universities' Order of Merit events in 2011-12 - leads fellow Stirling student Hannah McCook as well as Ashley Smith and Gabrielle Macdonald (both St Andrews) by two shots, having scored a highly impressive three-under par round of 73.
Both men's and women's championships have their second 18 holes tomorrow (Monday) before a cut and final 36 holes on Tuesday.
