STIRLING v ST ANDREWS MEN'S VARSITY FINAL AT LOSSIEMOUTH

REPORT FROM LOSSIEMOUTH BY Dr ROB MacPHERSON
On a windy but sunny semi-final day at Moray New golf course in Lossiemouth, the top two seeded teams - Stirling and St Andrews - progressed to Friday's  final on Moray Old with relatively little impediment.
In the first semi-final, St Andrews took a commanding 4-1 lead from the morning foursomes and, despite some fine individual performances in the afternoon, Aberdeen were unable to eat into this lead.
A good win for Aberdeen's Keith Shanks and a half for Nick Macandrew playing at Nos 2 and 3 respectively came too late to make any difference and the team from the Home of Golf took the honours with 10-5 margin.
In the other semi-final, Stirling 1st (the university golf scholars) suffered a few sqeaky moments after the morning foursomes again their "non-scholar" Stirling 2nd colleagues. 3-2 at lunchtime.
However, class told in the end. In the afternoon singles, all ten scholars outplayed their 2nd team opponents and a final margin of 13-2 reflected the gulf in class (and echoed the previous meeting this season when the scholars came out on top in an intramural match at the Gleneagles Hotel)
Tomorrow's final will see Stirling and St Andrews battle out the championship for the Mitchell Trophy - the third time in five years that these pairs have come together at this stage.
