PRIMM, Nevada – Anglo-Scot Alasdair Dalgliesh earned medallist honours for the second time in his US collegiate career earlier this week, leading No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Christian to a nine-shot win over No. 2 Oklahoma City University in the Battle at Primm, which ended Tuesday.
Dalgliesh, a sophomore from West Sussex, England, shot a 2-under-par 70 at Primm Valley Golf Club on Tuesday, giving him a three-round total of 8-under 208 (69=69-70), two shots better than runner-up Darryn Ellis of Wayland Baptist (Texas) (70-71-69).
Dalgliesh overcame five bogeys with seven birdies.
“Three-under-par today was a great score,” OC coach David Lynn said.
Dalgliesh’s previous individual win came last fall in OC’s River Oaks Intercollegiate in Oklahoma City. He’s the second OC golfer to be a medallist this spring, as Jared Consoli took top honors at the Wyndham Invitational at TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas, Texas.
The Eagles started the final round five shots ahead of OCU and posted a 285, while the Stars closed with a 289 and failed to make up ground. OC and OCU have faced each other four times this spring, with OC winning three tournaments and OCU beating the Eagles in a one-hole playoff in the other event.
No. 3-ranked Grand View (Iowa) finished third at 874, three shots behind OCU. Wayland Baptist (876) and California State-San Marcos (878) rounded out the top five. Eight of the NAIA’s top 25 teams played in the event.
All five of OC’s golfers had steady rounds on Tuesday on the 7,131-yard layout. Bogstrand matched Dalgliesh with a 70 to finish tied for 12 at 217. Preston Wilkins shot a 71 and was 14th at 218. Logan Herbst and Consoli each shot a 74 and tied for 15th and 43rd, respectively.
“We made some mistakes today but the guys just didn’t let it bother them,” Lynn said. “They are recovering well and staying in the present. I am very pleased with our progress thus far in the season. It has been a very tough schedule to start the season.”
After four out-of-state tournaments, OC will play close to home next week in the Central Oklahoma Invitational at Gaillardia Golf Club in northwest Oklahoma City.
“It will be a great change of pace to sleep in our own beds,” Lynn said.
