LANARKSHIRE TOP TWO SEEDS GO OUT BEFORE SEMI-FINALS
Defending champion Rachael Taylor from Germany and Ruth Rankin (Lanark), the top two seeds for the match-play stages of the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship at Bothwell Castle, have failed to reach tomorrow morning's semi-finals.
All four quarter-finals went to the 18th green.
No 2 qualifier Rankin was beaten in the first round by Emma Caddow (Strathaven) who won by two holes. Caddow went on to reach the last four by beating Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) by one hole.
Taylor was surprisingly beaten in the second round by Jenny Potter (Cathkin Braes) who won by 3 and 2. Potter (pictured) made the most of a flying start, her confidence boosted by going two up with a birdie at the third hole.
Taylor squared the game at the 14th but Potter holed a 30yd putt for a birdie 2 at the short 17th to regain the advantage and clinched victory at the 18th.
Potter, the No 8 seed, now plays Susan Wood (Drumpellier), the No 4 qualifier, while Caddow, 15th of the 16 qualifiers, plays No 3 seed May Hughes (Lanark).
In her quarter-final, Wood was two up against Fiona Scott (Bothwell Castle), playing the 15th but was brought back to all square at the 18th. Fiona was unfortunate to hit the burn and despite having a great shot to the green - the ball hit the flag - she lost the hole and the match to Susan.
