GEORGIA HALL HOLDS HALFWAY LEAD AT ENGLISH WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLAND GOLF
Dorset’s Georgia Hall holds a one-shot lead over Lancashire’s Kelly Tidy after both players scored one-under 74 in the second round of the English women’s championship at Royal Birkdale. The event is sponsored by Tourism Ireland.
They’ve pulled away from the field, with four shots separating Kelly from the group of four players who share third place: Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), Gill Nutter (Formby Ladies'), Kerry Smith (Waterlooville), Emily Taylor (Royal Lytham & St Anne).
Georgia (image © Leaderboard Photography), a reserve for next month’s Curtis Cup match, finished her round with two birdies and is one-over par at the halfway stage of the championship. She’s satisfied with steady progress on a day when the brutal winds of the first round eased, but scoring conditions remained tricky.
“It’s good to improve with each round,” said the 16-year-old from Remedy Oak. “It was better today, but it’s still tough. There are birdie chances out there but anything round par is a good score.”
Georgia reached the turn at one-over par but came home in two under, thanks to birdies on three par fives: the 13th where she drove into a bunker but one-putted, and then the finale of 17 and 18.
Kelly, a Royal Birkdale member, certainly made the most of those birdie chances as her round got underway. She was five-under after seven holes and reported afterwards: “I could have birdied all seven!”
Her score slipped back with four bogeys in a row from the eighth, but she settled again when she birdied the short 12th. “I made two bad swings today and they cost me two shots, but the other bogeys were fair. It’s tough out there, but it’s good to play in the wind, it’s a true test of links golf,” said Kelly, who is in the Curtis Cup team.
She added: “I’ve left a lot of shots out there, but I’m not complaining, I’ve played well – and maybe the putts will drop tomorrow.”
Holly Clyburn, also a Curtis Cup player, is among those sharing third place after a round of contrasting halves in a one-over 76. She was five over to the turn but then exploited the scoring possibilities to come home in four-under.
After a double bogey on the ninth she made a conscious effort to regroup and to focus on hitting fairways and greens. She was quickly rewarded with birdies on the 10th, 12th, 15th and 17th and remarked: “I had a birdie chance on every hole, I was playing proper golf and I was happy,” she said. “It was a good way to finish and good for my confidence.”
Among the others sharing third place are Lancashire’s Gill Nutter (Formby Ladies’) who scored level par 75, helped by a superb eagle three on the 17th; and former champion Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) who birdied the 18th to also return 75. Meanwhile Emily Taylor (Royal Lytham & St Annes) finished birdie, eagle for 76.
The field was cut after today’s second round to the leading 36 players and ties. The cut fell on 17 over par and 40 players qualified.
