Scottish girl international Hannah McCook from Nethy Bridge has won the Northern Counties women's golf championship on her first appearance in the final.
The 18-year-old Grantown on Spey Golf Club scratch player (exact handicap 0.2) and Stirling University student won an epic encounter at Elgin Golf Club this afternoon (Monday) against four times title winner Cara Gruber (Royal Dornoch) at the 20th hole.
It was Hannah's second big win in a matter of weeks. She recently won the British Students Tour women's championship at West Lancashire Golf Club.
There was little to choose between the players on the outward half with Hannah twice one up over the first six holes but a birdie by Cara at the eighth saw them all square as they turned for home.
Gruber went two up by winning the 10th with a par and the 12th with a birdie. That was the high point of the match for the Dornoch player.
She bogeyed the 14th and 16th to be pulled back to all square by McCook. In an exciting finish, the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th holes were halved before McCook won the title with a par at the 20th.
McCook had two birdies in her round, Gruber three but three bogeys from the 14th onwards proved very costly for the older player
Cara, who now plays off one, was Northern Counties champion in 2001, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

She beat the defending champion Jenny Milne (Elgin) by 5 and 4 in the morning semi-finals. McCook won the other semi-final by 7 and 5 against Reay youngster Eleanor Tunn.
New champion Hannah and beaten finalist Cara are both playing in the Scottish women's amateur championship at Tain, beginning tomorrow with the first of the qualifying rounds.
The handicap championship was won over her home course by 15-year-old Carinne Taylor who brought her handicap down from 36 to 18 last year. She beat Ella Simpson 4 and 3 in an all-Elgin final, having won her semi-final 6 and 5. Ella won her semi-final by 4 and 2.
