Craigielaw's Jane Turner repeated her opening 75 at a much calmer Tain links today to be the top seed among the 32 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the 98th Scottish womens amateur golf championship.
Her aggregate of four-over-par 150 gave the 22-year-old Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen graphic design student from Penicuik two shots to spare over the second best qualifier, big hitting Laura Murray (Alford) (79-73) with teenager Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) (78-77), last years beaten finalist the No 3 seed, just ahead of former champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) (77-79) and two teenagers who have won their county titles within the past week, Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) (79-77) and Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) (80-76), pictured in action below.
So everything is coming up roses for Jane Turner after the Sunday disappointment of losing to Linda Caine in the final of the Midlothian county championship ... but it was a proverbial game of two halves for Turner in the second qualifying round.
The outward half cost her 41 shots - six over par, thanks to visits to five bunkers, which cost her a double bogey 6 and four bogeys.
"I was hitting it well enough but I just couldnt stay out of the bunkers," said Jane whose troubles saw her drop out of the lead.
"I cant offer any explanation. I didnt change anything, do anything differently but the inward half was a completely different story. I birdied four holes, the 12th, 14th, 17th and 18th, didnt have a single bogey, coming home in 34.
"So Im feeling on top of the world again. No, I don't want to make any predictions about winning the title!"
Alfords Laura Murray has been the outstanding Scot in open tournaments so far this season, being the top player from North of the Border in both the "Helen Holm" and the Welsh stroke-play.
And she has continued her good form at Tain.
"I had one bad hole today, the ninth, which cost me a double bogey 6 - and I had to hole a 10-footer for that!
Otherwise, I feel I am playing great," said 23 year old Laura who birdied the long ourth, the long 11th, the 12th and 17th in her second-round 73, the best score of the two days of qualifying."
There was a play-off for the last of the 32 places between 16-year-old Fiona Liddell who flew in from Germany, where her dad is a pro, only on Monday, and Scotland senior cap and local player, Anne Ryan (Tain)
There should have been a three-way play-off but Linda Urquhart (Banchory), who had also finished on 175 could not be found in time to tee off with the others.
Youngster Fiona won the play-off at the second extra hole and plays top seed Jane
Turner in the first match off the tee tomorrow morning at 8.30am.
No typhoon at Tain today but Ailsa Summers was taking no chances. She was well wrapped on the first tee. Image by Cal Carson Golf Agency.
