LIAM JOHNSTON LYING JT 13th IN NCAA DIV 1 CHAMPIONSHIP
Liam Johnston from Dumfries, a freshman student at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, is lying joint 13th in a field of 156 after the first round of the NCAA Division 1 men's championship at Riviera Country Club, California.
Johnston, pictured, shot an opening round of level par 71 over the testing, 7,292yd course, despite a double bogey 6 at the second.
Starting at the 10th, Johnston birdied the 10th, long 11th, bogeyed the 12th, 13th and 15th, birdied the short 16th and long 17th before his double at the second. But he finished on a high by covering his last seven holes in one under par, thanks to a 2 at the sixth.
In all, Liam had five birdies, one double bogey and three bogeys.
Leading the field on 67 is Anton Arboleda (UCLA) by a shot from Corey Connors (Kent State) and Tyle McCumber (Florida).
There are six players on the 69 mark.
Irishman Kevin Phelan (North Florida) from Waterford is T27 with a 72.
Tom Berry (San Diego State) from Surrey is T46 with a 73.
Paul Dunne (Alabama-Birmingham) from Greystones, Ireland is T81 with a 75.
Banchory's Chris Robb, a former Scottish schoolboys champion, is T98 on 76, having bogeyed five holes in a row from the 11th after starting his round at the 10th.
Chris stopped the rot with a birdie at the first and bogeyed the second before he parred his last seven holes.
In the team event - which it is all about for the Americans - Alabama's bid to match the NCAA title-winning performance of their women's team (Stephanie Meadow et al) got off to a good start. They are leading on 285, three ahead of Florida and Auburn with UCLA and Oklahoma joint fourthj on 289.
Tennessee-Chattanooga are T24 on 299.
