STEPHANIE MEADOW v LEONA MAGUIRE IRISH FINAL ON THE CARDS

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION  

Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush) will play Lucy Simpson (Massereene) while Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) takes on local girl Carla Reynolds (Seapoint) in the semi finals of the Irish Women’s Close Amateur Championship, Co. Louth tomorrow.

Meadow played solidly throughout the day and held a two-hole advantage over her Muskerry opponent Jean O’Driscoll on the thirteenth tee. O’Driscoll was not to succumb easily and squared the match before Meadow holed from four feet to close out the tie on the home green.
Lucy Simpson (Massereene) was in sparkling form all week and, having dispatched leading qualifier Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) in the morning, edged past Sue Phillips (Woodbrook) on seventeen. 

Twin sister Leona continued her strong form to race to an early lead in her quarter final tie, however Sarah Helly (Enniscrone) rattled off three successive threes to peg back the Cavan teenager only to fail in the comeback of the week and fall at the final hurdle.

The fourth quarter final tie saw local girl Carla Reynolds (Seapoint) blaze a trail in her match with Holly Robinson (Co. Sligo) having earlier dispatched 2010 Irish Champion Mary Dowling (New Ross) that morning. Other notable casualties in round two were Lisburn’s Paula Grant, Maria Dunne (Skerries), Olivia Mehaffey (RCD Ladies) and Ennis’ Sarah Cunningham.  

In the ITA WALLACE Plate, Kelsey Coey (Clandeboye) overwhelmed a luckless Anne McCormack (Roscommon) in the final. Kelsey birdied the first, sixth and then eagled the ninth after a 5 iron approach shot to 20 feet. A birdie on ten saw her close out the match one hole later.
