TOP SEED SALLY WATSON OUT, SO TOO FOUR CURTIS CUPPERS
Top seed Sally Watson (Elie and Earlsferry) bowed out in the second round this afternoon of the British women's open amateur championship at a very wet and mist-shrouded Carnoustie.
Three Curtis Cup heroines from the GB and I team at Nairn are through to the last 16. Unfortunately two of them, Amy Boulden and Stephanie Meadow, will meet in tomorrow morning's third round. The other is Kelly Tidy, a match-player extraordinaire. She struggled in the stroke-play stages but here she was in her element, beating Olivia Winning (Rotherham) 7 and 5 to reach the third round with three or four under par figures.
Leading qualifier Sally Watson had a good first-round win in the morning over Emilee Taylor (Holme Hall) but could not raise her game in the afternoon and lost by two holes to a Canadian, Augusta James, who is a freshman student at North Carolina State University - indeed 19-year-old Augusta has just won Freshman of the Year honours in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Defending champion Lauren Taylor (Woburn), record-setting winner at the age of 16 at Royal Portrush last year, fell at the first hurdle this year, beaten 2 and 1 by Spain's Patricia Sanz Barrios 2 and 1.
Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) had a marvellous 5 and 3 win over 17-year-old Curtis Cup player Bronte Law (Bramhall) after being two up at the turn with two-under-par figures. Elsewhere in the first round, Law's Curtis Cup team-mates, Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) and Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) were KO'd.
Two more Curtis Cuppers, Amy Boulden (Conwy) and Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush) clung on for grim death, Boulden reaching the last 32 with a win at the 23rd and Meadow surviving at the 22nd.
Boulden, a semi-finalist at Royal Portrush last year, reached the third round with a 4 and 3 win over Austraian Marina Stuetz She will meet Meadow in an all-Curtis Cup third-round clash, Meadow having won by 4 and 2 against Nathalie Mansson, conqueror of Rachael Watton.
Late in the day McKechin, one up with three to play against France's Laure Castelain, lost all three holes to go down by two holes.
The Scot had almost had a hole in one at the short 13th, her ball coming to rest an inch or two from the cup.
