ST MACHAR v GRAMMAR IN PLF ABERDEEN SCHOOLS FINAL

FROM DEREK JOHNSTONE
St Machar Academy and Aberdeen Grammar School will contest the Paul Lawrie Foundation sponsored Aberdeen Schools’ League Trophy at Deeside Golf Club on Tuesday, June 19.
In the semi-finals, held at a dry but very cold Newburgh Golf Club, St Machar Academy beat Oldmachar Academy 2½-½ while Aberdeen Grammar School were surprising 2-1 victors over Cults Academy.
The first semi-final between St Machar and Oldmachar was much tighter than the final result would suggest. In the first match, which was exceptionally low scoring, Oldmachar took an early one-hole advantage.
However, the St Machar pairing battled back and finally secured parity with a Mark Rimmer birdie on 15. Chris Somers then followed with a birdie on 17th to secure a one-hole victory.
In the battle of the brothers, it was the McKenzies of St Machar who were victorious. They opened up an early two-hole lead and this was comfortably held until the game finished on the 17th green.
In the final tie, the St Machar pairing of Chelsie Angelo and Aidan Page seemed to be cruising to victory when they found themselves 3 up with 4 holes to play. However, their dogged opponents, Liam Carnegie and Scott D’Agostino, chipped away at their advantage, eventually levelling the tie on the final green.
In the second match, Aberdeen Grammar School showed great determination and steely resolve to edge through 2-1 against the trophy favourites, Cults Academy.
Aberdeen Grammar, hoping to win the trophy for a fourth time in eight years, found themselves down in all three ties going through 13.
The situation became even more critical when the second pairing of Cameron Howe and Lewis Allan succumbed to an early defeat at the hands of Adam Fisher and Ryan MacKinnon. However, their first and third pairings fought back, both winning on the last green for a famous victory.
