64th BOYD QUAICH MEMORIAL TGOURNAMENT STARTS TODAY

An international field of 72 student golfers are contesting the 64^th Boyd Quaich Memorial Tournament over the Old and New golf courses in St Andrews from today (Monday) until Wednesday.

First played in August 1946 in memory of two St Andrews students killed during WW2, the tournament’s aim, as inscribed on the Quaich presented to the winner, is: “to foster the lasting friendship of all nations”. The tournament will again be recognised by the R and A as a World Amateur Golf Ranking event.

The standard of play is expected to be very high this year as almost half of the entrants have a handicap of scratch or better.  Freddie Edmunds and Conor Gask from the University of St Andrews will be aiming to win on home soil. Frazer Ogston is another local who will represent an overseas university; Texas Wesleyan.

As usual there will be players from a wide variety of UK universities, as well as entrants who study in the USA, Ireland, Germany, Sweden, France, South Africa, Canada and Australia. Play began at 13.30 today on Tuesday and the final round is scheduled to begin on the Old course at 0730 on Thursday 12^th July. Spectators are very welcome.
