HOLYWOOD PRODUCES ANOTHER STAR ... JESSICA CARTY
Jessica Carty has something in common with Rory McIlroy - they both come from Holywood, near Belfast.
Jessica also became a champion golfer today when she won the Irish Under-18 girls' close championship for the Blake Cup at Waterford Golf Club.
She staged a grandstand finish to come from behind to beat
another player from north of the Border, Olivia Mehaffey (Royal County Down) by 2 and 1.
Jessica eagled the 15th to square the contest and finished birdie-birdie to win the title. When she won the 16th it was the first time in the final she had been in the lead.
Olivia started the brighter of the pair and was two up after five holes. Jessica won the 10th to halve the defecit but Olivia won the 11th with par.
The 12th was halved in birdies but the momentum turned in the match when Jessica won the 13th with a conceded birdie putt. The 14th was halved in pars before Jessica turned on the style to finish eagle-birdie-birdie 3 - 2 - 3 to win her first (and last) Irish girls close championship.
In the morning semi-finals, Mehaffey wins with a birdie on 19th against Niamh Ward (Lurgan).
Olivia was one down playing 18 but had a great par save from a greenside bunker to take the match down the 19th ....
Jessica Carty recovered from two down at the turn against Mary Doyle (The Heath) to win 3 and 2.
Sarah Boden (Kilkeel) won the Pat Fletcher Plate trophy by beating Chloe Weir (Shandon Park) by one hole.
Sarah was down for much of the match to impressive play by Chloe who was three up through 11 before Sarah won the 12th and 15th with birdies, levelled the match on the 16th and won the 17th to go one up and won on the 18th.
