JUNIOR DAY OF GOLF AT MONTROSE ON TUESDAY, JULY 17

Throughout 2012, Montrose 450 is celebrating golf being played on Montrose Links for 450 years. However, as well as commemorating Montrose’s rich golfing history and heritage, Montrose 450 is also helping to ensure the continued success of the game locally by being heavily involved in the development of junior golf throughout Angus.

“In conjunction with sponsors GlaxoSmithKline, Montrose Round Table and Carnoustie Country, we are holding a Junior Day of Golf on Tuesday, July 17, 2012,” said David May, chair of the Montrose 450 committee.  “This will feature eight competitions for junior golfers of all ages and skill levels, as well as providing youngsters who have never played golf before with a chance to try out this popular sport – and it’s all free.”

Jason Boyd, golf professional at Montrose Links, explained that junior golfers will be able to compete on the Montrose Medal and Montrose Broomfield Golf Courses, as well as participating in a putting competition. “During our Junior Day of Golf, Angus Council Sports Development Team will be providing free Tri Golf sessions to potential, new and novice golfers at Montrose Links, which will be followed by nine holes on the newly-refurbished South Links Pitch and Putt Course.

This is an excellent chance for youngsters to find out what golf is all about – and just how much fun it can be – without paying a penny.”

In addition, Angus Council is providing nine Angus golf clubs with free transport for twenty of their junior golfers to Montrose Links on July 17. “However you don’t need to be a junior member of a local golf club to participate in Montrose 450’s Junior Day of Golf,” stressed Jason. “This event is open to all youngsters - locals and visitors, golfers and non-golfers – and everyone who participates will receive a special medal. To join in with the free golfing activities on offer, simply turn up at the Professional Shop at Montrose Links on July 17.”

Councillor Mairi Evans, Carnoustie Country spokesperson, expressed her hope that youngsters from across Angus will take full advantage of this special day at Montrose Links. “Montrose Links’ 450 years of golfing heritage is one of the reasons Carnoustie Country, which covers 30 courses in and around Angus, is considered the cradle of golf,” said Cllr Evans. “Initiatives such as Montrose 450’s Junior Day of Golf will help to ensure golf remains as popular with future generations as it has been for the previous 450 years!”
