LEGENDS TOUR
SEATTLE – Nancy Scranton picked up her fourth win on The Legends Tour, official
senior tour of the LPGA, with a one-shot victory at the inaugural LPGA Legends
Swing for the Cure tournament at Inglewood Golf Club on Sunday.
Scranton led by as
many as three shots in this 18-hole event, making birdie on three of her first
four holes before finishing the tournament at 2-under 71. The event was
presented by MulvannyG2.
“I hit it really
close,” said Scranton, who joined Rosie Jones and Christa Johnson as the only
other Legends Tour members with at least four wins on tour. “I hit it to three
feet on the first hole, to two feet on the second hole and I made one 20-foot
putt with the rest of my birdie putts inside six feet.”
Scranton faltered on a
four-hole stretch on the back nine with bogeys on Nos. 11, 12, 13 and 14, which
opened the door for Rosie Jones. Jones took a two-shot lead during Scranton's
bogey streak.
“I saw somewhere out
there that Rosie was 2 under when I was even par and I just wanted to get it
back under par,” said Scranton, an Illinois native and Florida resident. “I hung
in there and birdied 16 and 17. That was really satisfying.”
Scranton held the
clubhouse lead, but Jones threatened to bump off the leader with an eagle putt
on the final hole. Her eagle attempt rolled past the cup and Jones drained a
tricky birdie putt coming back to secure second place at one-under
72.
LPGA Hall of Famer
Patty Sheehan birdied the 17th hole and had a shot at tying Scranton on 18, but
her birdie bid from 12 feet lipped out of the cup. Sheehan tied for runner-up
honors alongside Jones at one-under 72.
“It feels really good
to win," said Scranton, who earned a $15,000 winner’s check and a trophy designed
by glass artist Bryan Rubino. "It felt great to finally see the ball go in
the hole again. Hopefully, that’s a sign of things to come.”
Scranton topped a
field of 30 LPGA Legends -- among them five LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers,
including fan favourite Nancy Lopez and Pacific Northwest native JoAnne Carner,
who played in the final pairing.
Fans at the event at Inglewood Golf Club
welcomed the return of women's professional golf to the region for the first
time since 1999. Tournament sponsors announced a likely return of the LPGA
Legends next year.
