ABERDEEN SOLICITOR TO CAPTAIN JUNIOR GB AND I TEAM
Aberdeen solicitor Elaine Farquharson-Black has been chosen by the Ladies Golf Union to captain the Great Britain and Ireland team in next June's Junior Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Chantilly Golf Club, near Paris. Elaine, a member of Deeside Golf Club and a past Scottish women's amateur champion, played for Great Britain and Ireland in two Curtis Cup matches against the United States (1990 and 1992) and two Vagliano Trophy matches against the Continent of Europe (1989 and 1991). She also playing in the GB and I team of five who won the Astor Trophy (formerly the Commonwealth Tournament) at Northumberland GC in 1991. During her top-class amateur playing career, Elaine played in two British girls championship finals and one British women's open amateur championship final. She won the women's world better-ball amateur championship in Brazil with Helen Dobson as her partner in 1990. She won the Scottish women's amateur championship at Machrihanish in 1990 after winning the Scottish girls match-play title at West Kilbride in 1985.She has captained Scotland on several occasions but this is the first time she will have led a GB and I team. Elaine, the mother of two young boys, is enthusiastic about her new role as captain. "Attending this year's Curtis Cup at Nairn brought back many warm memories for me of representing my country and I am honoured to be asked to captain the Junior Valgiano team. "The match is a wonderful opportunity for our young players embarking on their international careers. "I was fortunate to play under several inspirational captains and I hope that I can use my own experiences to help the next generation of golfers develop. I am also looking forward to working with and learning from Tegwen Matthews who led the Curtis Cup team so magnificently at Nairn." |
