IRISH GIRL INTERPROVINCIAL MATCHES

Ballinrobe Golf Club
22 - 23 August 2012

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE ILGU
Gemma McCarthy gave Munster an excellent start beating Ulster's Irish Girls International Jessica Ross.  Despite being 3 down early in the match, Gemma fought hard and closed out the match with a 20 ft putt on the 18th to win by 2 holes.
Ciara Magill birdied the 14th and 15th to defeat Ulster’s Hannah Henderson while teammate Lisa O’Shea had a great 4 and 3 win against another of Ulsters young Internationals Niamh Ward.
Niamh McSherry, Chloe Weir and Sarah Boden all recorded wins for Ulster but Munster had the final say with Paula Walsh from Doneraile defeating Victoria Craig 4 and 2 to record a fine overall win for Munster.
Ballinrobe’s Shannon Burke gave her Connacht team the perfect start, playing level par golf on her picturesque home course she won her match on the 16th against Leinster’s Laura Doherty.
However, Leinster proved too strong for Connacht overall and won their remaining 7 matches by convincing margins to set up an interesting encounter against Munster this afternoon.

In the afternoon series of round robin matches Leinster took on Munster with both sides knowing that a win would be vital in order to challenge for the trophy.  Gemma McCarthy once again gave Munster the perfect start but Shannon Heery leveled the affair with a win for Leinster in the second match. Ciara Magill from East Clare followed up her win this morning with another fine victory on the home green this time at the expense of Leinsters Irish Girls International Mary Doyle from The Heath.

Munster’s Lisa O’Shea and Paula Walsh both impressed again with fine wins against Leinster’s Julie McCarthy and Laura Ryan respectively.  Aoife Barry secured the tie in favour of  Munster defeating Shannen Brown by 2 holes despite Molly Dowling and Rachel McDonnell both winning again for Leinster.  Munster now know the title is in their hands if they win against Connacht tomorrow.
Ulster made amends for their loss to Munster this morning by defeating Connacht in fine fashion.  However, local favourite Shannon Burke secured a half point for Connacht against Ulster’s Jessica Ross in order to avoid a complete white wash.  Ulster know they will need to defeat Leinster tomorrow and hope that Munster loose to Connacht in order to have any chance of defending their title.
