NO SCOTS LEFT IN BRITISH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP
And then there none. Scotland started the match-play stages of the British girls golf championship at Tenby in South Wales with five players among the 64 qualifiers. The first round saw four of them make an early exit, leaving Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) the lone survivor in the last 32.
But, having played very well in dreadful conditions of wind and rain to record a 6 and 4 win over the No 12 qualifier, Nanna Madsen (Denmark), Connie did not reach the same standards when the rain ceased but the wind got even stronger in the late afternoon.
She was beaten 5 and 4 by Ashleigh Greenham (West Essex) after being three down at the turn.
Germany-based Rebecca McGeehan was perhaps the biggest disappointment. Having earned the No 4 seed status with good form in the stroke-play, she lost by 5 and 4 in her first match-play tie to the No 61 qualifier, Leticia Ras=Anderica from Spain.
Scottish U18 girls champion Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) lost by 3 and 1 to Marta Perez Samartin (Spain), the 19th qualifier, after trailing by three holes on the 10th tee.
Clara Young (North Berwick) lost by 4 and 3 to Yasemin Sari, one of the small band of girls brought over to the championship by Banff-born Spencer Henderson, the Turkish Federation National Coach.
Jess Meek (Carnoustie Ladies) did well to hold the highly-rated Spanish girl Clara Baena to a square match at the end of nine holes and the tie went all the way to the last green before Baena won by two holes.
The top third-round match will be between top seed Perrine Delacour (France), No 18 in the women's world rankings, and Georgia Hall (Remedy Oak, Dorset), No 6 in the world rankings. The winner might well on to be crowned British girls champion.
