BRISBANE GOLF CLUB TO HOST ASTOR TROPHY IN 2015
NEWS RELEASE
Golf Australia has confirmed it will host the 2015 Astor Trophy at Brisbane Golf Club from 12-16 January 2015.
The Astor Trophy is a women’s teams competition for amateur golfers, comprising teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Great Britain & Ireland. Each team is represented by five players, who contest foursomes and singles match play in a round robin format.
With the event only played every four years, it will be 20 years since Australia last hosted the event, which was previously known as the Commonwealth Trophy.
Golf Australia’s Manager - Championships, Therese Ritter said “This is a wonderful occasion for Golf Australia. To host some of the best women amateur golfers in the world is a great pleasure and we look forward to some exciting golf in the match play format.”
Brisbane Golf Club is a fitting venue, with the testing layout having already played host to major Australian Championships, including the 2009 Australian Women’s Stroke Play Championship and the 1996 Australian Amateur Championship.
Australia has only hosted the Astor Trophy three times previously – Royal Melbourne Golf Club (1963), Lake Karrinyup Country Club (1979) and Royal Sydney Golf Club (1995).
Australia has won the event on four previous occasions, the last being in 2003 in New Zealand. Past Australian representatives include Lindy Goggin, Jane Crafter, Corinne Dibnah, Alison Munt, Lindsey Wright and Frances Bondad, while past international players include Becky Morgan, 2003 Australian Women’s Open Champion Mhairi McKay, Janice Moodie, and current World Number 1 Amateur, Lydia Ko.
The event originated when two Australian Ladies Golf Union delegates (Miss Jean Derrin and Miss Mollie McLeish) suggested to the Ladies Golf Union that a tournament should be conducted within the Commonwealth. The idea was first accepted by the LGU, and later by three other countries – Canada, South Africa and New Zealand, when they were approached in 1957. The trophy was presented by Nancy, Viscountess Astor, CH.
