NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Ewan Scott, the talented teenager from St Andrews, has stormed to success in the 2012 Scottish Hydro Boys’ Order of Merit.
The 17-year-old topped the standings with an impressive total of 775 points amassed over the course of a fine season, over 130 points clear of his nearest rival, fellow Scotland National Boys’ Squad team-mate Jamie Savage (Cawder).
Scott enjoyed a superb start to the year, reaching the final of the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys Championship at Murcar Links where he lost to Craig Howie (Peebles), before landing the Golf Data Lab Scottish Youth Championship with an outstanding display at Ladybank.
The former English Under-14s champion, a pupil at Madras College, then won the Faldo Junior Series Scottish Qualifier to secure his spot in this week’s Faldo Grand Final at the Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland, while he also represented Scotland in the European Boys Team Championship and Boys Home Internationals.
“To win the Scottish Youths and reach the final of the Boys’ match play got the season off to a really good start,” Ewan said. “I stayed pretty consistent, with a lot of high finishes so that racks up the points.
“The rankings table takes care of itself if you can play good golf. As the year went on, it became my goal to stay on top so to win it in the end has fulfilled a goal.
“I’ll hopefully play a few more Men’s events next year, but obviously play the Boys’ circuit as well. Defending my Scottish Hydro Boys Order of Merit title is a pretty good goal for 2013 – two out of two would be nice.”
Runner-up Savage also posted a series of fine displays throughout the season, reaching the quarter-final stage of the Boys Amateur Championship, winning the Scottish Hydro Junior Tour event at The Roxburghe and finishing sixth at the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Scottish Boys Stroke Play.
Howie ran him close, finishing just nine points behind in third place, thanks to his superb victory in the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys Championship alongside 2nd and 3rd places in the Scottish Hydro Junior Tour Series events as Gullane and Rowallan Castle.
Alva’s Lawrence Allan ended the season at fourth spot in the rankings, with last year’s SGU Boys Order of Merit champion, Greig Marchbank (Dumfries & County), in fifth.
Scottish Hydro, already a major supporter of golf in Scotland, became official sponsors of the SGU Boys’ Order of Merit and Junior Tour series on a three-year deal launched at the start of the season.
The Boys’ Order of Merit ranks the country’s best performing youngsters across a number of major events throughout the season, including three 54-hole Scottish Hydro Junior Tour events in 2012.
Jonny Petrie, Sponsorship Manager for Scottish Hydro, said: “We’ve been delighted with our first year of sponsorship with the Scottish Golf Union and would like to congratulate Ewan on his fantastic achievement
“He has had a great season and is a perfect example of the talented young Scots coming through the Scottish Golf Academy programme. You only have to look at his qualification for this week’s Faldo Series Europe Grand Final, a prestigious international event, to realise his talent.
“Our sponsorship of the SGU’s emerging talent is a great fit with Team Scottish Hydro and the Scottish Hydro Challenge and it would be great to see some of the players competing in the junior events breaking through to those levels over the next few years.”
