In very windy conditions, Howie had a five-over-par 77, Marchbank a 78 and Whyte an 82.
The trophy is awarded to the boy or girl returning the best overall scratch aggregate.England's Max Orrin showed his class with a wind-taming, one-under-par round of 71 to lead overnight by one shot from a girl, Karja Pogacar from Slovenia.
Orrin had two birdies and one bogey in his so-steady round.
"It was a solid round. I wasn't expecting it to be so windy and I would have settled for one or two-over," the 18-year-old admitted.
Another English teenager, British boys champion Matthew Fitzpatrick is also well placed after his 73.
Howie was out in one-under-par, before the wind blew him off course over his inward half.ยทTHE DUKE OF YORK YOUNG CHAMPIONS TROPHY TOURNAMENT
