SUSAN SIMPSON GRILLED BY GOLF WRITERS AT HOYLAKE
Susan Simpson, Carnoustie-born Ladies Golf Union Head of Golf Operations, faces a battery of golf writers in the Media Centre at Hoylake today following the announcement that the second-round figures returned by the players before play was suspended at 8.18am due to very high winds would be declared null and void.
Susan said that there had been a tournament precedent for their action.
She also said that the organising committee would be making a further announcement at 2pm but, even if conditions had abated sufficiently, the second round play would not start untl 3pm at the earliest.
All options are being considered but it is certain now that the second round will not be completed until Saturday which means that the cut to the leading 65 players and ties cannot take place before then.
Thirty-six holes by the qualifiers on Sunday is one of the options being considered, said Susan.
The wind was gusting up to 60mph and play was suspended when players reported that their golf balls were not remaining stationary on the greens. Some balls on the more exposes greens had been blow six to eight feet away from their original positions.
