LUFKIN, Texas – Sam Johnston fired a final-round 69 and Vilhelm Bogstrand and Anglo-Scot Alasdair Dalgliesh, pictured, both posted top-10 individual finishes as Oklahoma Christian closed its fall golf season with a third-place finish in the Crown Classic this week.
OC was one of only two non-NCAA Division I teams in the event, which was won by the host team, Stephen F. Austin. SFA posted a three-round team score of 882 on the 6,692-yard layout at Crown Colony Country Club, beating runner-up Sam Houston State by 21 shots. OC was six shots further back with a score of 909.
The Eagles’ team score of 299 was the best of the day among the eight teams in the tournament.
Bogstrand, who was the NCCAA Championship medalist last week, had another strong individual finish, finishing fifth at 223 after firing a 4-over-par 76 on Tuesday.
Dalgliesh, the co-runner-up at the NCCAA event, tied for ninth in the SFA tournament, closing with a 75 to finish at 230. His earlier rounds were 76 and 79.
Dalgliesh finished some 24 shots behind the runaway winner by 10 strokes, Mitchell McLeroy (Stephen F Austin) (71-65-70 for 10-under 106.
Johnston, the other NCCAA co-runner-up, might have also finished in the top 10 at the SFA tournament if he hadn’t had to withdraw from the second round due to illness.
He came back with a 3-under 69 – the second-lowest score of the tournament by any player – after shooting a first-round 73
“Sam came back with an outstanding round,” OC coach David Lynn said. “Also, Vilhelm had a solid week. I was proud of how he grinded.”
“As a team, we still struggled with the same things,” Lynn said. “We are excited to have some down time and look forward to some well-deserved rest.”
