R and A Foundation Scholars Eilidh Briggs (right in picture) and Charlotte Austwick (left) notched up a notable margin of victory when they won the Freddy Zorraquin Trophy in Argentina.
The girls enjoyed a nine-shot victory in the special team event at the Argentina Ladies’ Open Championship at the Club de Campo Los Pinguinos, near Buenos Aires earlier this month.
The team match was between the R and A Scholars and the Argentina Golf Federation selected pair of Magdalena Simmermacher and Faustina Peve.
Eilidh and Charlotte totalled 315 while Magdalena and Faustina's aggregate was 324.
The individual championship over 54 holes was dominated by Argentina lady professionals. Manuela Tarazona won with a four-under-par total of 212 (70-70-72) with Victoria Tanco, also a professional, joint runner-up with Argentina amateur Maria Olivero de Artica.
Tanco shot 74, 76 and 68 for 218, which Maria matched with rounds of 73, 72 and 73.
There were four professionals in all in the top 10 finishers.
Charlotte Austwick finished T16 on 230 with scores of 76, 80 and 74.
Eilidh Briggs came T23 on 236 with scores of 82, 77 and 77.
Briggs, the 2011 Scottish Girls’ Champion and a student at Stirling University, and Austwick, a third year student at York University, had previously played together in a three-woman team representing Great Britain at the World University Golf Championships in the Czech Republic, where they finished in seventh position.
The R and A Foundation Scholars’ programme supports more than 100 male and female students in several countries throughout their period of study. The R and A Scholars’ Tournament takes place from April 8-9, 2013 on the Old and Eden courses in St Andrews.
