NEW WOMEN'S AMATEUR EVENT PLANNED IN USA'
FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
The inaugural Women’s Porter Cup Invitational will be held on June 11-14 at Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, New York State, in 2013.
The field will be approximately 60 players, by invitation only, with some of the best women’s amateur players from around the world.
The format will be a 54-hole stroke-play competition with no cut.
The decision to begin a women’s event comes at a time where there are only a few women’s amateur tournaments over the summer months (in the United States).
“Annually hosting the Porter Cup and Senior Porter Cup, the Niagara Falls Country Club has a long and distinguished association with competitive amateur golf,” said Porter Cup Tournament Director Steve Denn.
“By adding the Women’s Porter Cup, we are re-affirming our commitment to the amateur’s place in the game while providing a hospitable venue for the world’s best female players to showcase their talent.”
The well-known male amateur event, the Porter Cup, which annually features some of the top college and amateur players in the country, will be contested for the 55th time just a few weeks later, July 23-27. The Senior Porter Cup will take place in September.
EDITOR'S COMMENT: You would think the organisers of the proposed Women's Amateur Porters Cup in America would take a look at the global calendar of leading women's amateur tournaments at that time before announcing their dates.
Obviously, they didn't because the British Women's Open Amateur Championship is being played in South Wales that same week (June 11 to 15).
Most of Europe's leading female amateurs will be heading for the Machynys Peninsula that week, not across the Atlantic to the inaugural Women's Porter Cup.
If they had asked me, I could have told them!
